Doctor Who Christmas Special

21 Dec

Our Sci-fi editor Michael Stevens gives us his thoughts on this years Doctor Who Christmas Special:

This year’s Christmas special is intriguingly titled The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe. That hint of Narnia influence is intentional – from what we’ve seen and heard there’s going to be children, a lot of snow, and some weird and wonderful characters to encounter! Once again Matt Smith is at the helm as the 11th Doctor, in a story partly set in 1940s Dorset. (If you find the idea of the Doctor adventuring in the snow appealing, then check out our audiobook The Silent Stars Go By, featuring the Doctor, Amy and Rory battling the Ice Warriors on a very snowy planet!) Doctor Who will return in 2012 with more stories on TV, and we’ll be back with more 11th audio-original stories, soundtracks, Classic Novels readings and more!

Thoroughly Modern Millican…

28 Nov

Obviously being a dedicated member of the AudioGO team I was fully aware of the fab Sarah Millican who appears regularly in our comedy download features. Also having seen her appear on a few comedy road shows on the TV, the performances always raised a smile! However, I do have to confess that she hadn’t fully caught my attention and was an audio that I had yet to listen to! Then when a friend of mine asked if I wanted to come along to see a comedian ‘not sure if you have heard of her’ called Sarah Millican perform on a Sunday night in Oxford, I was pleased to say, ‘yes I know her that sounds like a great idea’!

The performance was brilliant and we laughed from start to finish, not only was it a great routine full of brilliantly told stories it was the audience interaction and quick retorts that flew back and forth that had me most definitely laughing out loud! I am off to listen to the audio now for sure! If you want to do the same then Sarah Millican’s Support Group: Series 1 is available to download from www.audiogo.co.uk

Sarah Millican is continuing on her tour through December and in to 2012, tickets and dates are available via her website http://www.sarahmillican.co.uk

The Sense of an Ending Written by Julian Barnes

Fourth time lucky, Julian Barnes has finally won the 2011 Man Booker prize for fiction, having missed out on three previous occasions, with his powerful, unsettling and beautifully crafted new novel The Sense of an Ending. The story of one man coming to terms with the memory of his past, it is laced with the trademark precision, dexterity and insight of one of the world’s most distinguished writers. It was described by the chair of the judges, Dame Stella Rimington as “beautifully written… a book that spoke to humankind in the 21st Century”. Now you can also enjoy the novel as an audiobook. Produced by AudioGO as both a download or on 4 CDs, this complete and unabridged version is beautifully read by Richard Morant.
